Beaches
There are four beautiful beach areas within 3 miles of downtown Camden! Two offer fresh water and two are ocean side beaches. All four are kid-friendly and offer gorgeous Maine scenery.
For sunbathing and playing at or in the ocean, we recommend Laite Beach on Bay View Street or Walker Park on Elm Street in Rockport.
Laite Beach: From downtown Camden, travel along Bay View Street a half mile. Laite Beach will be on your left where you can enjoy a wonderful sand beach and fantastic views of Camden Harbor; the width of the beach depends on the tides. In addition to the beach, there is a pleasant grassy area with swings and a newly built Children’s Amphitheatre. Also at the park are grills, picnic tables and bathroom facilities.
Walker Park in Rockport is located 2.5 miles from downtown Camden. Traveling north from Camden on Route 1, turn left onto West Street at the traffic light in Rockport. Turn right at the end of West Street and take an immediate left onto Elm Street. Walker Park will be on the left. There’s a grassy area with a children’s playground, picnic tables, and fire pits with grills. At low tide there is a sandy area.
Both destinations are also included on the Scenic Bike, Hike or Drive page.
For a day of freshwater fun, we recommend Barretts Cove on Megunticook Lake and Shirttail Point on Megunticook River.
Barretts Cove: From the center of Camden at Camden National Bank continue north through town. Stay in the left lane when passing the Camden Public Library and take a soft left onto Route 52. Continue on Route 52 North for 3 miles. As you crest a long hill and start your descent, look for Beaucaire Lane on your left; Barretts Cove will be immediately on your right after turning onto Beaucaire. In addition to a small sandy beach, Barretts Cove offers a grassy area with picnic tables and play area for the children. There’s an outhouse and portable facilities.
Shirttail Point is located on upper Washington Street, which starts in downtown Camden between the Village Soup Building and the Camden Town Office. Travel up Washington Street 2 miles and find Shirttail Point on your right! It has a small grassy picnic area and fresh water swimming on the River.
