The Camden Public Library will present Patrisha McLean's multi-media project on domestic abuse for the month of February in the Picker Room Gallery, as the first stop in a statewide tour.

Finding Our Voices is women breaking the silence over the domestic abuse in their lives, and includes photo portraits and audio of the women telling their stories.

The opening reception is Valentine's Day, Thursday February 14, from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., with a talk and slide show by the artist, a talk by survivors, and a community discussion about domestic abuse.

"We are standing up and speaking out to show how much of this there is, hidden, all around us," McLean said. "We need to end the shame and stigma for the victims and get more accountability for abusers."

"The sisterhood that has developed and that is growing," McLean said about the participants ranging from a former TV news anchorwoman in Casco and architect in Camden to artist in Ellsworth and prisoner in WIndam, "has been very healing.  These are some of the bravest, strongest, and kindest people I have ever met."

McLean, a photojournalist who lives in Camden, said it was important to her that the project launch in her hometown because of the support she has received here, and thanks Nikki Maounis and Cayla Miller at the library for helping to make this happen.

The exhibit is supported by the Maine Arts Commission, a Deborah Pulliam Social Justice Grant, the Maine Coalition to End Domestic Violence and local business consultant CJ Kenna who created the graphics and is contributing a website
