Bay Chamber Announces its 2019 Screen Door Festival
Rockport, ME — Bay Chamber Concerts, Rockport’s beloved musical institution, is thrilled to announce its 2019 Screen Door Music Festival running from August 14-18 with over 19 events in five days. The Festival‘s name, Screen Door, reflects the inviting, summery gatherings that are so much a part of Maine, while engaging audiences with the riveting lineup for this year that unfolds in Rockport. Now in its eighth year, the Screen Door Festival is steadily gaining prestige and attracting more attendees as well as marquee performers.
"Screen Door now has a perfect identity for a festival that brings world-renowned musicians to these intimate venues, all in a super relaxed, summer-in-Maine atmosphere,” said Manuel Bagorro, Bay Chamber’s Artistic Director. "I think this year’s roster of artists really shows that Screen Door has found its footing in 2019.”
This year we explore the BEAUTY OF TRANSFORMATION, an idea that threads through programs in the Screen Door Festival. The transformative power of homage animates the literature-inspired Union Hall program several of violinist Jennifer Koh’s Bach for Breakfast programs, as well as Brad Balliett’s Free But Miserable, a set of Viennese-style waltzes reimagined from a 21st century American perspective. Our festival ends with a poignant human story of self-discovery in a concert performance of the magnificent contemporary opera, As One by Laura Kaminsky, Mark Campbell and Kimberly Reed, which follows a transgender woman on her journey of transformation and acceptance. The 2019 Screen Door Festival offers inspiring music, convivial conversation, atmospheric venues and approachable, world-renowned artists, all in a distinctly summer-in-Maine setting.
Bagorro believes this festival brings a truly unique experience to the Midcoast at the height of summer. "This is so much more than chamber music,” Bagorro said. "It is a creative mashup and a celebration along one of the most beautiful shorelines in the world.”
