City: Camden
State: Maine
Location: Camden Public Library

Each summer on a small island just off Maine and New Hampshire’s coast, researchers from the Shoals Marine Laboratory work to save and protect threatened and endangered seabirds called terns. On Thursday, August 1, at 4:00 pm, at the Camden Public Library, Dr. Jennifer Seavey, the John M. Kingsbury Executive Director will discuss how terns experience more of the globe in their lifetimes than most other species — traveling close to 60,000 miles in a year. Many of the birds return to Seavey Island, the largest tern colony in the Gulf of Maine. Dr. Seavey will explain how studying the birds helps researchers both protect the species and understand more about the health of the Gulf of Maine. She will also touch on the state of commercially important fisheries and the impact ocean plastics are having on them.
